Review: The Burger Joint

It has been said that The Burger Joint produces the best burgers in Bristol, and from my experience I'd have to say that I totally agree. Located on Whiteladies Road, The Burger Joint is a small, independent restaurant with a huge reputation. It was first found on Cotham Hill, but after a successful start it moved to a livelier location where it could attract more customers. The set up was like nothing I have encountered before, and therefore I was provided with a unique dining experience when I ate there. On each table there is an order form, in which you simply tick what you want to eat in the various sections of the order form.

Section 1 involves choosing a starter or small bar snacks. These are completely optional of course, and you can leave the boxes blank if you don't want anything. However if you are going to get a starter, I'd advise that you share it with at least one other person, as the main courses are quite large!
Section 2 is where you choose what type of burger you want. The choice is vast, with the options of: beef, lamb and mint, venison, wild boar, grilled chicken, peri chicken, veggie burger and mixed mushroom, garlic and herb. These all cost £7.50 (except the venison and wild boar which are slightly more expensive) and are served in a lightly toasted ciabatta bun with lettuce, red onions, sliced tomato and gherkins. They also come with a free side (see section 5).
Section 3 offers you an enormous range of toppings which cost 80p each or you can purchase 3 for £1.95. It includes ingredients such as: bacon, chorizo, onion rings, 4 types of cheese, mushrooms, pineapple, onions and peppers. There are too many to list, so I will post the link at the bottom so you can browse for yourselves!
Section 4 involves choosing 2 free sauces which you can either have in or on the side of your burger. Again there are many choices including: ketchup, burger relish, mayonnaise, BBQ sauce, salsa, sour cream, mustard and horseradish. I would advise against opting for ketchup though as they put a bottle of this on every table!
And finally we come to...
Section 5 is where you can choose your free side. There are 8 choices here ranging from chips (many kinds) to coleslaw to salads and corn on the cob.

You then hand in your form to a member of staff and around 10/15 minutes later you will receive your very own, personalised burger! This is one of the things that I like most about 'The Burger Joint'. In most other restaurants, the burgers are already pre made and you have about 10 to choose from, whereas here it felt like the possibilities were endless. I was spoiled for choice, which admittedly did make the decision of what to have quite hard, but I enjoyed the idea of being able to piece together my own meal!

After breaking up from university at the beginning of the Easter holidays, my friend Jess organised lunch at The Burger Joint for all the girls, and it was the first time I had been since it moved. Inside it was quite small, but very quaint and the waitress was lovely. We all handed in our order forms and waited for our meals to arrive. I went for beef with cheddar cheese, bbq sauce and garlic mayo with french fries on the side. When it came it was just as tasty (and big) as I remembered it, and as it was a lunch time we managed to get our meal with a free drink. These were bottomless/refillable too which was an extra bonus and in the end I think my meal only came to £8.30 for a burger, chips and a drink. I don't know about you, but for me - being a student especially - this is exceptionally good value for money! I walked out, carrying my food baby in toe and was extremely satisfied.
My mexican creation - beef with
cheddar, chorizo and guacamole

I ended up going back to The Burger Joint twice (yes, twice!) during the Easter holidays, once with Jess, her boyfriend Matt and my boyfriend Jack, and once with my family for my mum's birthday. With my friends we shared the nachos (highly recommended!) and I had a beef burger with chorizo, cheddar and onion rings. With my family we shared olives and pistachio nuts to warm our stomachs up, and then I decided to opt for a mexican themed burger and went with beef with chorizo, cheddar and guacamole and sour cream on the side.

Having been there three times in the space of about three weeks, I would still go back without a doubt. It is clear that the ingredients are of an exceptional quality and they state on their website that they use locally sourced ingredients which is even better. I could not recommend it any more, and would say that if you are a Bristolian looking for somewhere to have a decent burger, The Burger Joint is the place to go. If you can't be bothered to leave the house, they have a take away option which may appeal to you instead!
